Dog Licensing Information

How to License

Licenses are available through the Sterling Town Clerk's Office. There are several ways to license:

1. Online using this link for Dog Licenses and Kennel Licenses: https://www.doglicenses.us/MA/Sterling/

2. By mail,  Town Clerk drop box, or in person at the Town Clerk's Office using the following forms:

Deadlines

The deadline for obtaining a dog license without penalty is April 15th of each year. Licenses are valid from January 1st to December 31st of each year. Licenses may be obtained throughout the year through the Town Clerk's Office.

Legal Obligation

All dogs 6 months or older must be licensed. In order to obtain a license, a copy of a valid/current rabies vaccine must be provided. The license MUST be worn on the dog. Anyone who has more than 4 dogs is required to obtain a kennel license.

Cost 

Spayed or Neutered Dog: $8.00

Intact Dog: $12.00

ADA Certified Service Dog: No Cost

Seniors (70+): No Cost

A newly acquired dog that is 6 months or older must be licensed within 30 days. If under 6 months old, the owner has until the animal reaches 6 months in age to license.

Moving with Dogs

All Massachusetts residents who move to or temporarily reside in another Massachusetts city or town are required to transfer or obtain a license in the new city or town if residence in that location will be longer than 30 days.

Foster Dogs

Foster dogs must be licensed by the foster care giver if the foster parent has the dog for 30 days or more.

Loss of a Dog

If your dog passes away, please notify the Town Clerk's Office. They will update their records to ensure you do not get contacted about license renewals for this animal and to avoid citations being issued for non-renewal of a license for this animal.

Ownership Change of a Dog

If a dog that you owned changes ownership or custody please notify the Town Clerk's Office. They will update their records to ensure you do not get contacted about license renewals for this animal and to avoid citations being issued for non-renewal of a license for this animal.
