Horse Public Safety Awareness

HORSE PUBLIC SAFETY AWARENESS

Public Service/ Awareness for All Individuals

  If you encounter a horse:

  • Horses are “animals of prey” which means they are the “flight” animal when faced with perceived danger.
  • If you encounter a horse, please speak to the rider, as soon as possible, which will help the horse understand that you are NOT a threat. They may hear you, but are unsure what you are; especially if you’re on a bicycle because of the unusual sound made from the tires.
  • Sudden walking, running, riding and driving can make a horse fearful – please slow down or stop.
  • Did you know horses have right of way on roads and trails?
    •  This is mandated because of their unpredictable nature.
  • Massachusetts law states that that you must slow down way down or stop in the presence of these animals!
  • Riders are often young girls, mothers, daughters, sons, brother, sisters –they are people and could be seriously hurt if people frighten these animals causing the riders to be thrown off!
  • Loud noises from vehicle/ motorcycles engines, radios or horns could cause a horse to spook.
  • A horse can bolt sideways at 45 MPH, causing a 1,000 lbs. animal to suddenly land on you and your vehicle.
  • Asphalt and the horses metal shoes and a very slippery combination, unfortunately, the side of the road/ shoulder may be nonexistent or unsafe for travel thus forcing the horse and rider to walk on the road.
  • If passing, please “pass slow and wide”! A rider’s left arm extended, and moving up and down is a signal to slow down.
  • Increased visibility, for walkers, cyclists and riders, including bright colors and reflective clothing, have been proven to prevent some accidents and injury. Also, wearing safety / personal protective equipment (helmets, gloves, and body protectors) have helped reduce some injury.
  • Remember to thank anyone (drivers, riders, bicyclist, or walkers) for their care, concern and attentiveness towards horse and rider safety.
