West Sterling Electrical Upgrades

The West Sterling Wells, located off Redemption Rock Trail in West Sterling, supplies approximately 70% of the town of Sterling’s water annually. This project will provide the station with much needed electrical upgrades including replacement of the failing emergency generator, installation of Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) for the pump motors and new electrical control panels. VFDs provide significant flexibility and cost savings when it comes to running high horsepower motors such as our well pumps. We will have the ability to turn up and down the speed of the motors efficiently to dial in the flow from each well. This work is expected to begin in the summer of 2024 and take several months to complete.

Maple Street Sidewalks

The Town of Sterling was awarded a “Complete Streets” grant through the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MADOT) complete streets program. As part of this program the Town was required to pay for the design work, while the grant covers the entirety of the construction cost. This project will replace the sidewalks on Maple Street from Main Street up to Bird Street and continue down Bird Street to the entrance to Sholan Terrace, or the Sterling Housing Authority. Lazaro Paving was awarded the contract through public bid in October of 2023. The work is expected to be completed Spring of 2024 and completed prior to June 30, 2024.

Route 62 & 140 Intersection Improvements

The Town of Sterling is working through the Massachusetts Transportation Improvement Project (TIP) process to provide much needed intersection improvements to the intersection of Route 140 and Route 62 in West Sterling. The TIP process, regulated by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MADOT) and the Montachusett Regional Planning Commission (MRPC) involves the Town funding the study and design portion for the intersection, while the state covers the cost of the construction. The study, design and permitting phase is a rigorous process to ensure the design meets the needs of all modes of transportation as safely as possible. Sterling, along with our consultant, is working through the MADOT required steps, with a current target construction date of 2027.

Department of Public Works Facility

The Department of Public Works is in the process of reviewing its existing facility at 171 Worcester Road and looking for the best path for the property into the future. The building is made up of the Administration offices, vehicle storage, garages, salt shed, fuel island, and Quonset hut. In 2021, the Town hired a consultant to perform a review of existing staffing and equipment and provide a space needs analysis for the DPW operations.

In March of 2024, the Select Board created the DPW Facility Committee, which will be charged with reviewing the existing facility, the operational needs of the department, and making recommendations to town officials as to the best way to move forward. Once all members have been appointed to the committee, they will meet regularly at publicly posted meetings.
