Building Department

The Building Department provides for public safety through the administration and enforcement of the State Building, Electrical, Plumbing and Gas codes and the enforcement of the Zoning by-Laws of the Town of Sterling.

The Building Commissioner is responsible for the review and approval of plans and the issuance of building permits under the State Building Code.  She is also responsible for the issuance of demolition permits, certificates of occupancy, certificates of inspection and responding to complaints concerning the safety of structures.  The Building Commissioner is also the Zoning Enforcement Officer for the Town of Sterling.

The Wiring (Electrical) Inspector is responsible for the inspection and approval of wiring and fixture installations for compliance with Massachusetts Electrical Code.  He is also responsible for investigating complaints concerning the adequacy and safety of wiring.

The Plumbing & Gas Inspector is responsible for the inspection and approval of new piping systems and alterations of existing systems for compliance with the provisions of Massachusetts Plumbing and Gas Codes.  He is also responsible for investigating complaints concerning the safety of gas and plumbing installations.
