TREE WARDEN

The Superintendent of Public Works also serves as the town's Tree Warden and is responsible for all trees within the rights of ways of all the town roads.

Removing Trees on Town Property (including road setbacks)
To request the removal of a tree that is on town property, send a written request to the Tree Warden.  Include the location, type and size of the tree, and an explanation of why you wish to remove it.

Please be aware that there are specific rules and regulations concerning the removal of trees on a designated Scenic Road.  If the tree is determined to be on a scenic road, you must contact both the Tree Warden and the Sterling Planning Board. The Scenic Road permit/regulation process is posted on the Planning Board's webpage .  If you are not sure whether or not the tree is on the Town's property, play it safe and ask the Tree Warden to make a determination.

Public Hearings are required prior to making a determination to remove a tree:
  • The Tree Warden must hold a public hearing before granting permission to remove any tree.
  • If the tree is located on a designated scenic road, then a hearing must be held before the Planning Board.

Vegetation Management Plan 2021-2026

Below is a draft of Sterling's Vegetation Management Plan (VMP) which outlines the town's plan to manage Rights-of-Way (ROW) vegetation while minimizing the use of herbicides. This plan is currently under review by the state and has not been approved.
