DRINKING WATER PROBLEM CORRECTED
Customers of Sterling Water Department were notified on July 21, 2010 of the presence of coliform bacteria in the drinking water and were advised to boil the water before using. We are pleased to report that as of 5:00pm July 26th the problem has been corrected and that boiling the water is no longer necessary.
Sterling Water Department has removed Worcester Well #2A from service after E.Coli was found in the well during the original sampling. Repeat samples collected from the well on July 22 have found total coliform but no E.Coli. The well will remain out of service while a physical evaluation is conducted as to the source of the contamination.
The water system has also implemented chlorine disinfection of all of the water and storage tanks to provide a disinfectant residual throughout the distribution system. Two complete rounds of samples were collected from the Sterling water system and were found to be absent of all coliform bacteria. Disinfection with chlorine will be continuing on a temporary basis until the evaluation of the wells has been completed and any corrective actions have been taken.
We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience.
