Boil Water Order Continues - 7/24. click here for more...
PLEASE CONTINUE TO BOIL YOUR WATER BEFORE USING

UPDATE Saturday, July 24, 3PM: As of Saturday, July 24th at 3PM, the boil water order continues to be in effect for all users of the Sterling Water Department System.  Preliminary results show no E-coli but some coliform in the system.  The water department has been disinfecting the entire water system and will take another round of sampling on Monday, July 26th per DEP directive.  Please be informed that it takes 24 hours to receive results of the samples collected.

If you receive a water bill from the Town of Sterling you are a user of the water system.  Please check the links below for the original notice and precautions that you can take.

Testing:
On Friday, 2 sets of samples were collected from the system.  We are required to take the 2 sets separated in time by at least 6 hours.  The samples were then submitted to a laboratory where they are tested.  It takes 24 hours to get the results of the samples, as it takes time for bacteria to grow.  The results from the Friday tests were returned to the DPW at approximately 3pm on Saturday afternoon.  Unfortunately, we did not get the results we had hoped for.  Disinfecting the entire system continues.

Samples will be collected again on Monday and submitted to the laboratory.  We do not expect any testing results until Tuesday afternoon, at which time we will update the information on the website, the DPW telephones, cable TV, newspapers, etc.  When the Boil Water Order is lifted, we also intend to notify town residents by telephone.  Until that time, please continue to take precautions.

BOIL WATER NOTICE

To all users of the Sterling Water Department

This is an important notice - please translate it for anyone who does not understand English.

BOIL YOUR WATER BEFORE USING

On July 21, 2010 our water system was notified that a water sample collected on July 20, 2010 from one of our wells tested positive for E.coli, which is a fecal indicator.  We are advising our customers to BOIL the water to reduce any potential risk to contamination.
